Texas Hold'em poker - How to rate
starting hands: The widow
The composition of the widow is determined by the probability
distribution of five cards taken from the 52-card deck.
After the full widow has been exposed you can depend
on the following:
50% of the time it will contain at least one pair.
This makes trips in the final hand a distinct possibility
80% of the time it will contain three or more cards
to a straight.
40% of the time it will contain three or more cards
to a flush.
34% of the time it will contain at least one ace. The
same is true of all other cards, but the rank of an
ace makes it of significant value.
In all of these cases, the number of players who see
the widow greatly affects the winning hand. The greater
the number of players, the more individual cards or
couples are available to be fitted to a given widow,
and thus the better the probable nature of the winning
hand.
